There are plenty of remedies and products on the market geared toward anti-aging and maintaining healthy skin. But what about the things done routinely that contribute to aging and are simply bad for the skin? Here are some important tips on what to avoid while practicing healthier facial care.

Too Much Sun Exposure

While 15 minutes a day in the sun to get a healthy dose of Vitamin D can be a good thing, too much time in the sun can be a problem. Healthy cells that renew the skin are damaged by the sun. Sun exposure has been linked to premature aging and the development of skin cancer. Overexposure to the sun over time results in increased visible wrinkles and brown spots on the skin.

Not Enough Sunscreen

Even if sunscreen is being used, many people tend to under apply it on the skin. Experts recommend applying an ounce of sunscreen and using a product that contains SPF 30 or higher for adequate protection from the sun’s rays. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or excessive sweating. It is also important to wear protective clothing when being out in the sun for extended periods of time.

Trips to the Tanning Salon

Many people think that tanning beds are safer than being in the sun. Actually, these quick tanning methods expose the skin to highly concentrated ultraviolet light. Both UVA and UVB rays, as acquired from salon tanning, are known to cause cancer. Even when salons claim that the beds are safe, they often contain UV rays that exceed what are considered to be safe limits. The result is premature aging and a significant increase in the risk for skin cancer.

Smoking

Smoking is linked to serious health problems like emphysema, lung cancer, stroke and heart disease. This addictive habit also contributes to faster aging of the skin. Similar to the effects of the sun on the outside of the skin, smoking causes harm and aging on the inside of the body. Smoking can also cause the skin to appear yellow in color and it adds to slower wound healing in the body.

Picking and Popping Blemishes

Some people think that picking at their acne can make it disappear quicker, when in fact, it can aggravate the situation. Popping pimples or scratching blemishes can create further skin irritation, as the open area created in the skin is susceptible to dirt and bacteria from touching. This can lead to the development of a skin infection. Continued picking at the area can even lead to permanent scarring.

Using Harsh and Unhealthy Facial Cleansers

Keeping the face clean is an essential part of maintaining healthy skin and it is important to choose cleansing products carefully. Facial cleansers should be mild and gentle in nature. Using only products that are natural in origin and free of chemical additives contributes to healthy skin on both a short-term and long-term basis. Additionally, washing gently, instead of scrubbing is important for a healthy facial cleansing routine.

Providing nourishing skin care for the face and body, along with reducing exposure to harmful substances can go a long way to promote healthy aging and beautiful skin.
