With a keen eye, Boston Magazine watched the celebrities at the Oscars closely to determine what plastic surgery treatments were most popular. As it turns out, the treatments weren’t out of the ordinary from the most popular procedures in the United States, which include: Botox, fillers, facial implants, facelifts, eyelifts, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation.
Botox and Fillers
Many celebrities of both sexes had received Botox and fillers before taking to the Red Carpet, including the interviewers. Botox is a purified protein that freezes the muscle it’s injected into for a temporary amount of time. It’s often used to make the forehead and other facial areas appear smoother. Facial fillers are a little different but generally soften and decrease facial wrinkles by “filling” them in. The costs of these procedures depend on the product and number of syringes used.
Facial Implants
Most of the facial implants seen on the Red Carpet were in the chins and cheeks of celebrities. These were noticeable by the contours and definition in their lower face and cheek areas. That’s what chin and cheek implants do: increase facial definition. They create more distinct features, natural angles and visible contours to balance the face in a structural sense. Although the chin, cheeks and jaw are the most common facial implants, there are other parts of the face where implants can be used. The average cost for this plastic surgery treatment is $4,000 in the United States.
Rhytidectomy and Blepharoplasty
A rhytidectomy is a facelift, and a blepharoplasty is an eyelift, both of which were seen on the Red Carpet. Both of these procedures involve the removal of extra skin and fat. For the facelift, the skin and fat is removed from the face and neck, and the remaining skin is pulled up and back to reduce wrinkles and make the face look younger. For the eyelift, the skin and fat is removed from the eye area to make the eyes look more rested and younger. There were 126,320 facelifts and 204,015 eyelifts done in the United States last year at a cost of between $5,000 and $6,000 for facelifts and between $1,200 and $4,500 for eyelifts.
Breast Augmentation
A “boob job,” as it’s informally known, is where the breasts are enlarged, and this looked like another popular procedure for celebrities this year. Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery in the United States and the second most popular procedure in the world, after lipoplasty. The enlargement is done by inserting a silicone or saline implant under the existing breast. Other than increasing the size, the surgery is performed to make the breasts more symmetrical or to restore the fullness of the breasts after losing weight or giving birth. The average U.S. price for this is between $4,000 and $10,000.
Rhinoplasty
What would the Red Carpet be without a “nose job” here and there? Boston Magazine saw that a few celebrities looked as though they’d had rhinoplasty. This surgery is performed to lower the “bump” on the nose’s bridge, refine the tip of the nose, decrease the width of the nose, and other reasons. In the United States, 243,000 of these procedures are done every year at an average cost of $4,310 each, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Overall, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that almost 14 million cosmetic procedures were done in the last year, and 1.5 million of these were surgeries. This shows that about 90% of all plastic surgery treatments aren’t actually surgeries. Instead, they are injections and chemical peels that aren’t too invasive. The celebrities on the Red Carpet have showcased the procedures that are most popular.
