Uneven breasts are nothing to be ashamed of. It is perfectly normal for women to have two slightly differently shaped or sized breasts, and around 50% of women in this world are said to have breast asymmetry.
However, there are times where the difference in size or shape affects a woman’s self-esteem. Studies have indicated that more than a quarter of all women have breast asymmetry that causes them concern.
Some women face problems identifying a bra measurement that will fit their two differently sized breasts in one bra. Others feel that their breasts look lopsided when wearing certain clothes.
Causes of Asymmetrical Breasts
Uneven breasts can be of two types: asymmetry in shape and unevenness in size. There are a number of potential causes for breast asymmetry:
• Genetics
• Puberty (one breast developing before the other)
• Weight loss or gain
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding and infection due to lactation
• Dominance of the left hand or the right one
• Improper body alignment
• Uneven shrinkage during the aging process or a medical condition
• Traumatic injuries involving the breast
• Breast cancer
Ways to Fix Asymmetrical Boobs
If your breasts are asymmetrical and you would like to improve their symmetry, you may be interested in a surgical breast procedure. Breast asymmetry can be corrected through two main plastic surgery procedures: breast augmentation and the breast lift.
During breast augmentation, prosthetic implants are placed to enhance breast volume and projection. Based on how severe your breast asymmetry is, your plastic surgeon may advise placing breast implants in one or both of your breasts.
A breast lift is a procedure used to change the shape of one or both breasts. It involves using a scalpel to trim away excess skin tissue. After this, the remaining skin is tightened and the breast is reshaped.
Breast procedures can involve resizing and repositioning of the nipple-areolar complex. This is a method of restoring nipple and areola symmetry between the breasts.
If the asymmetry is due to shrinkage, a breast lift may be performed in conjunction with your breast augmentation procedure to achieve optimal results.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Asymmetry Correction?
While most patients are suitable candidates for breast asymmetry correction, there are some who are not. If you are currently pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, it will be best to wait until after breastfeeding to get your procedure. These life experiences can alter the results of the surgery.
You must also be a non-smoker and in good overall health. These will minimize the chance of complications as a result of the surgery.
You must be very confident in your goals for the procedure. These goals must be discussed with your surgeon clearly and directly during a consultation at our office.
As part of your consultation, the surgeon will examine your breasts, discuss your complete medical history with you, and decide on the best option to restore symmetry. Make sure to tell your surgeon about any allergies you have and any medications you are currently taking.
