A youthful-looking face with smooth skin can make someone look more attractive. Unfortunately, with age, a lot of people develop issues like sunken cheeks, deep folds, and depressions that can mar the appearance of the face. A facial fat transfer is a useful procedure for these kinds of issues.
What Is a Facial Fat Transfer?
A facial fat transfer is a long-lasting procedure used to boost the volume of the face and improve its overall appearance. It fills in harsh folds and wrinkles and addresses sunken cheeks and other hollow regions of the face.
Unlike other procedures, a facial fat transfer doesn’t involve the use of synthetic filler materials. Instead, it involves using fat from a person’s body to fill in facial irregularities. Since the person’s own fat is used, the procedure is preferred by many patients as a more natural option.
How Is a Facial Fat Transfer Done?
A facial fat transfer is a procedure where fat is taken from other parts of the body and transferred, or grafted, to regions of the face. Gentle liposuction is first used to remove fat from areas like the thighs, stomach, and hips.
Dr. Spiegel typically makes use of local anesthesia for the procedure to numb the areas that will be used for fat harvesting, but in some cases, general anesthesia may be used instead. He then makes small incisions in the selected areas and removes fat from these regions. The incisions are tiny and usually cause no post-surgical marks.
The fat that is removed undergoes centrifugation to remove unnecessary elements. Once the fat is purified, cannulae are used to inject the purified fat into the targeted areas of the face. Dr. Spiegel takes more fat than will be needed to fill the area, as some quantity may not survive the procedure. He then injects it into hollow areas and wrinkles.
The fat is injected into locations where it is surrounded by healthy tissues so that it gets enough oxygen and nutrients. Care is taken to ensure the face is contoured evenly.
Post-Procedure Care
A facial fat transfer is usually an outpatient procedure and will be completed within an hour. Once the procedure is complete, cold packs are used to reduce swelling in the areas where fat was taken and the areas where it was injected. This swelling subsides within a few days.
Follow-up visits are needed to monitor recovery and the effectiveness of the procedure. Within a week, the effects of the surgery become apparent and improvements in facial features can be seen. A follow-up procedure may be required for some patients after a couple of months to ensure ideal results.
