According to information gathered by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Americans spent more than $12 billion on various cosmetic surgery procedures in the past year. However, the most surprising piece of info shared was the fact that invasive as well as non-invasive plastic surgery for men has seen a rise of as much as 43% over the past five years alone.
Substantial Increase Since 1997
The organization further noted that, since it began collecting its statistical data regarding men and plastic surgery in 1997, there has been a 273% increase in the amount of procedures that are being requested by and performed on men. A Business Insider report that was recently released mentioned that there are four types of men who opt for plastic surgery. The first type wishes to look like male models, while the second wants to perfect their image. The third type sees themselves as ‘athletic dads who want to have ‘daddy do-over’ procedures performed and the final group consisting of high-powered CEOs who view cosmetic surgery as a way to enhance their careers.
Making Men Feel More Confident
Dr. Douglas Steinbrech, a Manhattan-based plastic surgeon had the following to say regarding the ever-growing trend of plastic surgery for men, “These men are at the top of their career and they feel young and confident, but they’re worried they don’t look it. I tell these men I want to leave a little bit of wrinkles – wince wrinkles are sexy and trustworthy – and give them what I call the Forbes Facelift. This usually includes one or all of these procedures: an eye lift, neck lift, liposuction and jaw line re-contouring.
A Growing Trend
According to Dr. James Grotting, who is president-elect of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, this trend will not be declining at any point in the near future. “This is not a trend we expect to see want anytime soon. Facing a challenge and sometimes ageist job market, men, like women, are starting to consider their options to maintain a youthful appearance that exudes exuberance and energy and the full spectrum of care offered by board-certified plastic surgeons,” he said.
Some Procedures More Popular Than Others
More than 10 million different plastic surgery procedures were performed during 2014. Buttock augmentation was by far the most popular option, seeing an 86% increase in procedures being carried out. Other common options included labiaplasty (contouring of distinctly female body parts) and various forms of liposuction, which increased by almost 50%. Other procedures that enjoyed a substantial jump in popularity included tummy tucks, nose surgeries and breast augmentation.
Another form of plastic surgery for men that has become extremely popular over the past few years is that of blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift procedure. Before having any procedures performed, men should ensure that they visit a surgeon who is experienced as well as accredited. This will ensure that the end results are satisfactory and that the procedures are performed safely as well.
