Neck Lift Overview

What Is Neck Lift Surgery?

During a neck lift, a well-hidden incision is made along the bottom of the ear and up into the hairline behind the ear. This is shorter than the incision a facelift requires, and it camouflages beautifully into the natural crease of the ear and head. The ideal candidate has some fullness or excess skin in the neck but is otherwise happy with their face.

For some, we can do a neck lift exclusively through a small incision under the chin.  Here, we do a “deep neck lift” where the deeper tissues are addressed and tightened.  With a deep neck lift we often don’t need to remove any skin at all. This is great for younger persons with a full neck who still have very elastic and youthful skin.

Typically, a neck lift is performed in the operating room using monitored sedation or general anesthesia. In some cases, we can perform the procedure in one of our office procedure rooms with local anesthesia. The surgery usually lasts 1 ½ -2 hours, depending on the amount of work required and the complexity.

What are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

Benefits for a neck lift include the following:

  • Restores a youthful and elegant neck and jawline contour.
  • Eliminates sagging skin, "turkey neck," and double chin for a smoother appearance.
  • Creates a more sculpted, defined profile that enhances overall facial harmony.
  • Reduces visible signs of aging and improves skin elasticity.
  • Provides long-lasting results, often boosting confidence and self-esteem.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a Neck Lift?

  • Individuals experiencing sagging skin, excess fat, or muscle banding in the neck area.
  • Patients in good overall health who wish to rejuvenate their neck and jawline.
  • Those feel their neck has aged faster than their face, creating an imbalanced appearance.
  • Anyone seeking a tailored approach to achieve their aesthetic goals is evaluated during a personalized consultation with Dr. Spiegel.

What Is Recovery From A Neck Lift Like?

Recovery is relatively easy; patients are free to return home following surgery with the help of an escort. Most patients label the discomfort as minimal for the first week following surgery. It is common to experience some bruising and swelling for the following week around the neck and lower face, and even the upper chest for some patients, as gravity can pull the bruising downward.

Most patients feel well enough to resume work and daily activities about 10 days following surgery. If you have a less physically demanding job, you may be able to return to work sooner. Pain medication is given to patients, although many don’t need it after the 2nd or 3rd day after surgery.

Results You Will Love

We encourage rest and relaxation during the recovery period for the best results. Sutures are removed approximately 8 days after the procedure. Most patients experience mild redness at the incision, but otherwise look and feel good. Neck lift results typically last 7-10 years, although this varies from patient to patient, and you will know you are aging from a better starting point than before.

Safety Is Our Chief Concern

Every surgical procedure comes with risks. For a neck lift, these include bruising, swelling, temporary muscle or nerve weakness, bleeding, patches of numbness, infection, or the need for future revision. In almost all cases, any problems are easily treated during a quick office visit. Most importantly, problems after a neck lift are very rare.

Enhancing The Results Of Your Neck Lift

Combining a neck lift with other facial rejuvenation measures is a common way to get an overall younger appearance. The Spiegel Center offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical facial procedures including the brow lift, eye lift, and BOTOX injections to complement your neck lift results.

Dr. Spiegel can recommend additional options to help you achieve your desired look during your consultation. Not ready for a neck lift in Boston? You can consider InMode FaceTite (NeckTite), Morpheus 8, or botulinum injections to the neck bands.

Is a neck lift permanent?

A neck lift can provide long-lasting results, but the natural aging process continues. Over time, you may experience some degree of sagging or changes in the neck area.

What is the difference between a neck lift and liposuction of the neck?

While both procedures address excess fat in the neck area, a neck lift also addresses loose skin and muscle laxity, providing a more comprehensive improvement.

What are the potential risks and complications of a neck lift?

Risks include infection, scarring, hematoma, nerve injury, and dissatisfaction with the results. A thorough discussion with your surgeon should address these concerns.

Will a neck lift leave visible scars?

While some scarring is inevitable, skilled surgeons aim to minimize scarring and place incisions in inconspicuous locations. Scars typically fade over time.

Can I undergo a neck lift if I have medical conditions?

Your overall health is a crucial factor. Discuss your medical history and any underlying conditions with your surgeon to determine if you are a suitable candidate.

What types of anesthesia are used during a neck lift?

Neck lifts are typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s health. Your surgeon will recommend the safest option for your specific situation.

Can a neck lift correct issues like a 'turkey wattle' or double chin?

Yes, a neck lift is effective in correcting a 'turkey wattle,' which involves sagging skin and muscles, as well as a double chin, by reducing excess fat and tightening muscles. It creates a more defined jawline and neck profile.

How long does the surgery itself take?

The duration of a neck lift procedure varies but generally takes a few hours to complete.
