Although skin care is important at any age, many people don’t realize that the way they treat their skin during their late teens and 20’s will have an effect on how it looks later on in life. Issues such as wrinkles, sun spots and skin cancer don’t appear overnight, which is why it is crucial to take the best possible care of your skin during this time of your life.

Look Youthful for as Long as Possible

Many people only realize in their 50’s how neglected, tired and old their skin really looks. However, by this time it may be too late to do anything about the damage that has already occurred – or expensive treatments and options may be required to repair the damage. This is especially true when it comes to cases of deep wrinkles and sun spots, as these can be difficult to address later in life. Using the right skin care products and taking the necessary precautions during this stage of your life will go a long way in helping to protect your skin as much as possible – well into your 50’s or even beyond.

Using the Right Products is Crucial

During your 20’s, your skin will still have a high degree of natural elasticity and moisture. As a result, you will normally only need to use light moisturizing products – anything too heavy will clog the pores and cause potential breakouts. It is also essential to use a good quality sunscreen whenever you are going to be outdoors for more than 10 to 15 minutes a day. The body requires minimal sunlight exposure each day to produce the necessary levels of Vitamin D3 to remain healthy, but excessive sun exposure (longer than 15 minutes unprotected) can result in the development of sun spots, which can ultimately progress to skin cancer over time.

Quality is better than Quantity

While proper skin care is crucial in your 20’s; this doesn’t mean that you should rush out to purchase as many different products as possible. Instead, focus on purchasing 1 to 2 high quality skincare products such as a soap-free facial wash and a light moisturizer. If possible, use products that have been certified as organic, because these will not contain any harmful chemical-based ingredients. Another crucial point to remember is that you should never go to bed while still wearing any form of make-up, as this will also clog the pores and cause skin rashes and breakouts.

If you are unsure of the best way to take care of your skin, it may be a good idea to schedule a consultation with a dermatologist. He or she will be able to determine what skin type you have, which will enable you to choose the right products to use. If you already have the beginning stages of skin damage and you would like to find out how this can be addressed, you can schedule an appointment at our practice today.
