If you have stained or discolored teeth, chances are that you are aware of the different methods that are used by dentists and beauticians to whiten them. However, if you aren’t keen to use chemicals are laser treatment for any reason, here are 5 alternative methods that will give you excellent results as well.
1. Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda
This is one of the most popular organic teeth whitening methods because it is known to deliver good results. Combine a small amount of baking soda with some hydrogen peroxide until the mixture is relatively runny – it should not be grainy at all. Apply the mixture to your toothbrush and clean your teeth as you usually would. Not only will this whiten your teeth within a few days; the peroxide is naturally anti-bacterial as well.
2. Organic Coconut Oil
Many people are claiming that performing oil pulling with coconut oil or using it in their toothbrushes in place of toothpaste has made a remarkable difference in the color of their teeth after a few weeks. The oil pulling can be performed by placing 1-2 teaspoons of oil in your mouth and swishing it through your teeth for between 5 and 20 minutes at a time. You will be rewarded with whiter teeth and healthier gums as well – the oil has excellent antimicrobial properties.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
This can also be an excellent teeth whitening substance, although you may have to be willing to wait for at least 3 to 4 weeks before obvious results are seen. After brushing your teeth like you normally do, simply rinse your mouth out with a mix of half apple cider vinegar and half water (100% vinegar may be too harsh) afterwards. If you already suffer from sensitive teeth though, you may want to consider an alternative treatment, as this can cause the enamel to wear over time.
4. The Humble Strawberry
A combination of Vitamin C and an enzyme found in strawberries called malic acid has been found to have teeth whitening abilities. Mashing 4 to 5 ripe strawberries and rubbing the mixture on your teeth 2 to 3 times a week can provide excellent whitening results. Mind you, eating the strawberries can also go a long way in helping to whiten your teeth – be sure to rinse your mouth well after eating them or rubbing them on your teeth though.
5. Activated Charcoal
Placing activated charcoal powder on your teeth and allowing it to sit for a few minutes at a time can help whiten them relatively quickly. Alternatively, you can brush with it in place of toothpaste or you can mix it into water and use it as a mouth rinse. Regardless of how it is used though, it will need to remain in your mouth for approximately a minute or so, as this will enable stains to bind to it.
Although these methods have been proven to give you shiny white teeth, you should consult with a dentist if you notice any signs of increased sensitivity or pain while using them.
