When people say they want Botox treatments or have had them before, others may cringe. This is a natural reaction considering how taboo society has made Botox. However, how much of the stigma surrounding Botox injections is warranted? Here are some myths about the procedure that have been discredited.

Botox is Toxic to the Body

This is a big concern that people have about Botox injections, but it’s actually a myth. Botox is a botulinum toxin protein that has been purified. While botulinum toxin is a very dangerous form of food poisoning, the protein derived from it is purified and is safe to be injected. It’s not even capable of spreading the effects outside of the area it has been injected into. Botox is so safe, in fact, that antibiotics and aspirin could be more harmful to the body, while even the FDA has given it a stamp of approval.

Botox Distorts the Face and Expressions

There are many jokes out there about Botox treatments causing the face to freeze in place or making the show of expressions difficult. Although this can happen, it’s not very common. In fact, distortions and lack of facial expressions are only experienced in patients who have been injected with too much Botox or who have been injected in the wrong muscle. People who are considering Botox should make sure the treatment is carried out by a qualified doctor. Malls and salons aren’t the places to go.

Botox is Addictive

People can’t become psychologically dependent on Botox injections, but they will look and feel younger as their skin gets smoother and their wrinkles disappear. Although they will come to love their new look, the effects of Botox don’t last forever and usually wear off in 3 to 6 months. When it does wear off, they may feel like they need to go get another injection, but their desire to look good isn’t an actual addiction; it’s simply something they want. This is no different than regularly buying an eye cream to get rid of dark circles.

Botox is Painful or Unpleasant

Some people have had disappointing past experiences with Botox treatments, and their talk has put a painful or unpleasant stigma around all injections. However, this simply isn’t the case when a qualified physician is carrying out the procedure. Injections are actually pain free, and no unpleasant feelings should be experienced before, during or after the treatment. Although uncommon, some people can see a tiny bruise form at the injection site.

Botox is for the Middle-aged

When a lot of people first hear the word Botox, they automatically picture a middle-aged woman with wrinkles getting an injection in the forehead. However, Botox injections can be administered to anyone 18 years or older if there’s a real need for them to have the treatment. This is available at such a young age because teens are known to develop mimic lines, and treating them while the skin is still smooth is best. It becomes harder to treat the skin as it ages because it takes longer for the skin to get used to the effects.

Botox treatments have come a long way since they were first introduced. These above myths just go to show that the taboo around some plastic surgery-related procedures is unwarranted. This injection simply isn’t as bad as it’s been made out to be.
