Plastic surgery isn’t only for females. In the past decade, we’ve seen the number of plastic surgeries performed on males increase by over 100%. Additionally, surgeons are reporting that more males than ever before are interested in altering their physical features in some way, shape, or form. There are similarities in the reasons why males and females get plastic surgery; however, career advancement is a much stronger driving force in the male patient population. Put quite simply, men get plastic surgery to get better jobs and make more money.
Being physically attractive can have positive implications for career minded and goal oriented men. Our competitive marketplace is one which puts fit, youthful looking men on a pedestal. By having a procedure such as a rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), or rhytidectomy (face lift), men can put themselves in a position to easily beat the competition and quickly climb up the corporate ladder.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is the most common plastic surgery performed on men. It’s commonly referred to as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping”. It lasts 1-2 hours and is done under general anesthesia. During the procedure, nose cartilage is shaved and re-sculpted to alter the nose’s appearance. The following can be improved by a nose job:
- Facial balance
- Nose width
- Nose size
- Nose bridge
- Humps or depressions
- Enlarged, drooping, upturned, or hooked nasal tip
- Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is commonly referred to as an “eyelid lift”. Upper and lower eyelid lifts are performed to reduce or eliminate puffiness, drooping, crow’s feet, dark circles, and wrinkles around the eyes. It’s a two-hour procedure done under local anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess fat, skin, and muscle around the eyelids. Minor incisions that follow the eye’s natural lines are made to ensure scarring doesn’t occur. It’s often done in conjunction with cosmetic procedures such as filler injections and forehead lifts.
Rhytidectomy
A man’s youthful face fades with age. A rhytidectomy combats this. The procedure, commonly referred to as a “facelift”, is used to improve sagging, creasing, and drooping of the face. It’s done under general or local anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon lifts the skin, tightens the muscles and tissues of the face, and anatomically repositions the skin. A facelift can be a bit more complicated than the above mentioned procedures. Operative and recovery time is longer and pain is usually greater; however, results are definitely seen. Following a facelift, the face appears many years younger than it actually is. Increased self confidence and less anxiety in regards to physical appearance is commonly reported.
The above mentioned procedures are three ways men have altered their physical appearance to successfully increase their position in the workplace. The face is one of the most looked at physical attributes. Improving it has been shown to increase social standing. The misconception that plastic surgery is only for women is slowly being replaced with the acceptance of reality that men and women alike want and can benefit from plastic surgery. Should you be interested, it’s always recommended that you contact a plastic surgeon to arrange a consultation.
